This beautiful book tells of a bunny born with a “Bethlehem star” on his forehead. Grandfather Josiah Rabbit explains the star’s origin to rabbits gathered in the moonlight and names the baby Gabriel, after the messenger angel. He tells a fable about how Jesus first gave the sign to a little rabbit who faithfully waited with him in the garden the night before his arrest and crucifixion. In a note to readers, the authors ask, “Did this story really happen? Clue: In real life rabbits seldom wear bow ties, and old rabbits almost never walk with canes! Is it a Bible story? No. This is a Christian fable. It’s a story from the world of make-believe, but is based on the reality that we have a loving, caring Savior.”

“What a rare and beautiful book! Seldom does emotion touch you like it will through the sensitive words of Pat Day and Philip Dale Smith and the exquisite, life-like illustrations of Donna Brooks. This story should become a family tradition. We rate it 5-star. .Please. . .get a copy of this book for your family library.” Velma Daniels, News Chief, Winter Haven, FL

“Exquisite. Inspiring. Every child should have this charming book” Alan Loy McGinnis, International best-selling author of The Friendship Factor, The Balanced Life, etc.

It was 1945 and WWII had just ended. Sixteen-year-old Dulcie Delaney and her twelve-year-old brother Jackie traveled by train from their coal-mining hometown in Kentucky to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with similar-aged cousins in Tenn. The planned adventure for the group and neighboring twins Erik and Anna Gunther was to explore Rebel Cave.

Legends about the cave told that it housed Civil War Confederate soldiers and, in later years, moonshiners. The young group of six set out to find relics that might have been left behind. Little did they suspect the scope of the adventures and nature of the treasures awaiting them in the labyrinth of passages.

This historical fiction novel helps young adults and adults gain insights and understanding about caves, ecology, the Civil War, day-to-day life following WWII, teamwork, conflict resolution, and coping skills for handling fears and prejudices. The book informs as well as entertains.

Smith, an avid spelunker who has major cave discoveries to his credit, writes with the authority of one who knows his caves. The historian/spelunker blend plus the straightforward, clean writing style of this father-daughter writing team makes this book appealing to middle and high school aged youth as well as adults.

“Written in a style reminiscent of the “Nancy Drew” books or junior novels of old … also incorporate(s) a fair amount of history, both of the Civil War and the post-World War II setting. –School Library Journal
